인권성화, 뉴욕 도착

주말에 걸쳐 인권성화릴레이가 미국횡단을 계속했습니다. 뉴욕의 축제 현장으로 함께 가보시죠. 애나 챈이 전해드립니다.

뉴욕의 일요일 날씨는 차갑고 눅눅했습니다. 그러나, 중국 인권을 향한 불꽃은 꺼질 줄을 모릅니다.

"오는데 참 오래 걸렸다. 이미 진작 이뤄져야 했을 일이다."

사실, 세계 인권성화 릴레이는 지난 8월, 그리스 아테네에서 시작됐습니다. 뉴욕은 84번째 경유지입니다.

주자들이 봉송하는 특별한 성화가 맨해튼 거리를 지나면서 중공 정권의 인권유린을 밝힙니다.

베이징 공식 횃불은 수천명의 반대 시위대가 모이는 등 최근들어 가는 곳마다 반대 시위에 맞닥뜨리고 있습니다.

인권성화에도 최소한 한 명의 반대자는 있어 보입니다. 다행히 한 사람 뿐이라 773번가에서 유니온 광장까지 이어지는 봉송경로를 바꿀 필요는 없어 보입니다.

인권성화는 총 150 곳의 경유지를 지납니다. 베이징의 공식 횃불 보다 더 많은 곳을 순회합니다.

주자들은 중국 공산당으로 인해 고통받고 있는 다양한 단체들을 대표하고 있습니다. 봉송주자인 루이 루소 씨는 박해받은 파룬궁 수련자들을 위해 달리고 있습니다.

"훌륭한 기회인 것 같습니다. 오늘, 우리 이웃인 뉴욕시민들에게 박해를 알리고 도울 수 있는 일에 참여하게 됐습니다."

작가인 도리안 예이츠 씨는 이런 행사들은 긍정적인 변화를 만드는 초석이 된다고 말합니다.

"이것이 바로 세상 일들이 변화하는 방식이다. 사람들이 나서서 말하기 시작한다. '이것은 옳지 않다'고. 다시 말하면 (나서지 않으면) 아무 것도 변하지 않는다. 마틴 루터 킹이 나서지 않았다면, 오늘이 있겠는가. 간디가 나서지 않았다면 - 바로 변화는 이렇게 오는 것이다."

행사는 파룬궁박해추적연합조사단(CIPFG)에서 주최했습니다. 참가자들은 저마다 다른 동기를 가지고 있지만, 한 가지 공통점을 가지고 있습니다. 바로, 세계가 중공정권의 인권유린에 대해 알 필요성이 있다는 것입니다.

"사람들은 알아야 한다. 어딘가에서 잘못된 일이 일어나고 있다면, 얼마나 먼 곳이든지 사람들은 정말로 알아야 한다. 왜냐하면, 세상은 좁기 때문에 조만간에 그 일이 우리에게 닥칠 것이기 때문이다.그 일은 정말로 우리에게 영향을 끼친다. 지금 당장은 아니지만, 곧 그럴 것이다"

Human Rights Torch Comes to New York

Over the weekend the Human Rights Torch Relay continued across the U.S. First we'll bring you to the festivities in New York City. Our Anna Chan brings us there.

STORY:
It started off cold and damp in New York City on Sunday. But it seems nothing could extinguish the flame for human rights in China.

"I think it's a long time in coming. It should have been done a long, long time ago."

In fact, it started last August, where the Global Human Rights Torch Relay began in Athens, Greece. New York is its 84th stop.

Runners are carrying this special torch through the streets of Manhattan to shed light on the Chinese regime's human rights abuses.

In fact, with 150 stops, the Human Rights Torch will tour more cities than Beijing's official torch.

The runners represented various groups who say their members are suffering because of the Chinese Communist Party. Runner Louie Russo ran on behalf of persecuted Falun Gong practitioners.

"Today I felt I had a great opportunity, to really come forward and help expose the persecution to our fellow New Yorkers today."

Writer Dorian Yates says these events are the foundation of making positive change.

"This is how things change. People have to stand up and start saying, 'This is not ok.' Otherwise, nothing changes. If Martin Luther King didn't stand up, who knows where we would be now. If Gandhi didn't stand up--I mean, this is how things change."

The event was organized by the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong. The participants all have slightly different causes, but there's one thing they all agree on: the world needs to know about the Chinese regime's human rights abuses.

[Louie Russo, Torch Runner for Falun Gong]:
"I think that people need to be made aware. When there's something wrong out there, no matter how far away it is, people really need to be aware of it. Because sooner or later—this is a small world, and it's going to get back to us; it does affect us--if not right now, sooner or later it will."
